Do You Know Who You Are?

Do you know who you are?

What makes you happy? What gets you excited? What is it that gets your juices flowing? What do you think about right before you go to bed? What is the first thing on your mind when you wake up? What defines your reality? Power and wealth? Money and opulence? A great career? High-status artifacts? Good health and relationships? Your family?

Knowing who you are begins with self-assessing. Self-assessing is knowing where you are at that moment in time. It is being aware of your essence—the complete you. Self-assessment means to evaluate every aspect of your reality from the inside out.

In order to experience happiness at the highest levels, it necessitates understanding who you are and what compels you—meaning, your motivation.

A person cannot fully become if s/he spends his or her time chasing after—whatever it is. Society has sold us on the narrative about pursuing above everything else— pursuing our dreams, goals, aspirations, ambitions and desires. But the joy of living is found neither in the pursuit nor the accomplishment. Pleasure that comes from the chase is usually temporary and fleeting.

This is not to say that a person should not pursue his or her goals. What is being suggested is that one should not pursue to be happy or to find fulfillment. Conversely, it is out of the abundance of one’s happiness and sense of being that a person should move toward his or her dreams.

If you desire to gain a deeper awareness and understanding of how to develop the essence of your true self, then tune into my podcast below.

  1. Great share as always. It reminds me of Stephen R. Covey’s habit #2 in his 7 habits oh highly effective people; Begin with the end in mind. It talked about the importance of self assessment. Indeed “it is out of the abundance of one’s happiness…that a person should move toward his or her dreams.”

  2. Great post. If you are pursuing your dreams for happiness and fulfilment, then that dream is not your passion. You should follow a dream not because you will receive happiness but because you love doing it. Usually you will have to make many sacrifices. But when you follow it like that willing to sacrifice many a thing for it, you learn to put your whole effort to it, with nothing standing in your way. And that will give you pure happiness and satisfaction. This is absolutely an inspirational post.
