Are You Living Your Dream Or A Bullshit Fantasy

As it relates to success and winning, I believe one of the most important success ingredients is the ability to self-assess. Self-assessing means being honest with one’s self regarding one’s motivations, strengths and growth opportunities (limitations). Self-assessing also implies knowing whether to move forward or throw in the towel.

Throwing in the towel does not mean quitting. Conversely, it means honestly evaluating one’s performance and effectiveness regarding the pursuit of a particular interest, dream or passion. Knowing whether or not you are good at a particular craft (or occupation) will determine the level of success you experience; hence, the necessity of being brutally honest with one’s self regarding one’s dreams.

I know of an individual who is enamored with the idea of public speaking. This person has convinced him/herself that s/he was born to be a motivational speaker. Here’s the thing though. This person is not really good in the self-empowerment sphere. But, because of the inability to self-assess, this individual continues to plan and center his/her entire life around paid speaking engagements, which, thus far, has turned out to be a complete dud. “Thus far” meaning nearly a decade with no traction or forward momentum in the self-empowerment circuit.

One of the most important success ingredients is the ability to self-assess.

In this person’s mind, s/he is living his/her dream by pursing his/her passion. But to everyone else, this individual is living a bullshit fantasy. S/he simply does not have the requisite skill to be a motivational speaker.

Do not believe the hype! Don’t get stuck in a bullshit fantasy because you’ve tricked yourself into believing that you’re good or great at something when in reality you’re not that good. Besides finding out what you are passionate about and really skilled at, there needs to be proof that your skill, gift or talent offers a unique and compelling solution to a real problem. That is, the market, and those within your industry have sampled your product, service or process, and have happily and willingly committed their time and money to your brand on a recurring basis.

There comes a time in one’s life when one has to stop and determine whether pursuing a dream that continues to bear little fruit is worthwhile. Sometimes the bravest choice in life is knowing when to reprioritize or abandon a particular goal for something better. Abandoning an interest that is dear to one’s heart is almost always difficult; however, the end reward is freedomfreedom to recast one’s vision and put one’s self on a path to greater happiness and success.
